HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!

Start your holiday Saturday morning with everyone downtown on the plaza for pancakes; enjoy your day, then rock out with Santa Fe's favorite son Alex Maryol at the Pub & Grill, then go and catch the fireworks at SFHS at 9 PM!

THE ALEX MARYOL BAND

The son of Greek-American restauratuers, Alex Maryol grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico surrounded by a lively artistic and cultural landscape.  Raised on the music of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Elvis Presley, he began songwriting during his teenage years while performing at smoky bars and coffee shops in downtown Santa Fe.  While primarily influenced by blues greats such as Lightning Hopkins and Buddy Guy during these years, Alex maintained a love for all musical genres from classical to grunge.

In his early twenties Alex gained a modest amount of noteriety performing as a blues act at festival favorites such as the Telluride Blues Blues and Brews Festival and the King Biscuit Blues Festival.  These years of working in the blues laid a solid foundation for him to expand his ideas.

His new release, Face The Day, takes these musical ideas and blends them with textures from pop, soul, rock and roots music.  The result is a sincere culmination of his experiences in music and life.www.alexmaryol.com

LEO RONDEAU

AMERICANA, COUNTRY & BLUEGRASS FROM NORTH DAKOTA & AUSTIN
Rondeau pulls his languid drawl across country ballads braced by banjo and steel, the caustic crack of his voice cut with an ornery attitude. With his debut, Bangs, Bullets and the Turtle Mountains, the North Dakota native's impressive songwriting drifts through easy honky-tonk anthems and supple, aching, country waltzes. -Austin Chronicle

Originally from North Dakota, Rondeau’s now made Austin his home, weaving his way through original country ballads that make the heart ache. His 2007 debut, Bangs, Bullets and the Turtle Mountains, mixes traditional country and bluegrass, with storytelling inspired by Rondeau’s upbringing in the Turtle Mountains...

The INFAMOUS

STRINGDUSTERS

WITH SPECIAL GUESTS

THE BOOTLEG PROPHETS

AMERICAN ACOUSTIC MUSIC

The Infamous Stringdusters are the new vanguard of acoustic music. Well crafted songs, vivid arrangements, instrumental virtuosity, stunning improvisation, unique individuality and complete harmony... Bluegrass, Rock, Country, Blues, Folk, and Jazz, the "IS" is American Acoustic Music. When The Infamous Stringdusters comes out June 10 on Sugar Hill Records, some may assume from the title that it’s a debut recording. Those already aware of the Stringdusters phenomenon will know differently: that 2007’s Fork in the Road was the album that boldly introduced this daring, disciplined band to the world of bluegrass and a wider world of music enthusiasts who heard it and decided: ‘if that’s bluegrass, then I love bluegrass.’ Fork in the Road was named Album of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Its title track was named Song of the Year, and the band itself earned the honor of best emerging artist in a competitive field. It was a stunning cap to an amazing 2007. Yet The Infamous Stringdusters feels like an introduction of a sort. Whereas Fork in the Road was made during their first potent months together, the new CD represents all the band has become during two years of intense touring, meticulous woodshedding and brotherly jamming. Nine band originals supplemented by a few carefully chosen tunes from colleagues in the acoustic music community, The Infamous Stringdusters is a cross-section of a band finding it's common ground and it's legs, staying near it's roots but continually exploring new territory. In their breakout year of 2007, the Infamous Stringdusters played over 150 dates, including the biggest festivals in acoustic music, jammed on major stages with their heroes, and landed a development deal for motion picture music with Lions Gate Entertainment. With the release of The Infamous Stringdusters, 2008 promises more roads and more new fans in bluegrass and beyond. www.thestringdusters.com

THE BOOTLEG PROPHETS

Drawing from blues and bluegrass, western swing, country and western,
folk and rock and roll, the Bootleg Prophets play their own blend of American roots
music infused with the spicy flavor of the Southwest, the earnest twang of
the South, the enveloping freshness of the Pacific Northwest, and the blue collar honesty of the Northeast.
Winners of the 2008 Specialty Duets Contest at the Four Corners Bluegrass Festival, Bootleg Prophets are Dave Devlin on dobro, mandolin, guitar and banjo, vocalist Cathy Faber on bass, and vocalist/songwriter Aimee Hoyt on rhythm guitar.

the cowboy junkies

Despite its title, the new Cowboy Junkies album, At the End of Paths Taken, is as much about new beginnings as it is about endings. It is also about human connections, the struggle to sustain those connections over time, and the complexities that can arise even when those connections are maintained. It is, in other words, a classic Cowboy Junkies album - a suite of smart, richly textured songs that value subtlety over broad, generic strokes, songs that prize insight and casual revelations over easily digestible clichés. Family lies at the heart of the album's eleven songs, and, of course, that is appropriate, too. Three of the band's members - singer Margo Timmins; songwriter, producer and guitarist Michael Timmins; and drummer Peter Timmins - are siblings, and bassist Alan Anton has been a member since the group formed in Toronto in 1985. Few bands have lasted nearly as long with their original line-up intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work. Albums like The Trinity Session (1988), Black Eyed Man (1992), Miles From Our Home (1988) and Early 21st Century Blues (2005), to isolate just a few high points, chronicle a creative journey that is impervious to trends. Each of those albums sounds as fresh and current today as when it was made. You don't stay together and produce work of that quality and depth without learning something about family and permanence - what lasts, what doesn't, perhaps even what shouldn't. But if their history is an important part of what led the band to At the End of Paths Taken, other factors entered in as well. "My idea was to write an album about families, about how generations affect generations, how there's a continuum," Michael says. "I'm the father of three young kids, and I've got aging parents, so that's obviously a big part of my life. But I found that what was going on in the outside world was affecting my writing. These times are extremely trying. What sort of world is being set up for my kids? All of that began to brew together." The result is an album that takes family as a starting point, but goes on to look at the vast range of people's responsibilities to and for each other. "Songs like 'Still Lost' and 'Blue Eyed Saviour' are ultimately about any parent and their kids, about sending them out into the world and having no clue where that journey will take them," Michael says. On "Mountain," Margo's vocal interweaves with a recording of their father, a successful aviation salesman, reading a passage about their family from a book he recently completed about his life.

KIM & the CABALLEROS

BIG OL' TWANGY COUNTRY

Kim says: “My mom force fed old country (we’re talkin’ Loretta, Cash, Waylon, Willie and the boys) to me at an early age, and I rebelled, first playing bass in an 80s rock band, “The Bohiems”, later becoming a folkie, still leaning in the rock genre, but mostly writing tortured love songs and political/social stuff in the band “Burning Joan.” For giggles, in 2003 I recorded a bastardized version of “Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain” for my mom’s birthday, and it all took off from there. I realized my roots had caught up to me and I liked it. We recordered the CD Blue Hearted Girl at Howlin’ Dog Studios in Alamosa, Co. and in Nashville. I live in Taos, New Mexico with my children; work with homeless youth at the DreamTree Project; garden; ride my horse, Nugget, up in the mountains (just like the song says); and sing big ‘ol twangy country every chance I get.”  www.kimandthecaballeros.com

ERIKA LUCKETT

IGNITING HEARTS ACROSS THE GLOBAL FRONTIER

Erika Luckett creates a powerful expression of world-inspired music. Poetic and sensual, her voice conveys lyrical depth, and her fiery, innovative guitar playing creates an orchestra of sound with only six strings. Performing Songwriter magazine introduces her this way: "To be blessed with prolific songwriting skills and a captivating voice is one thing. But to absolutely master an instrument on top of that is indeed an enormous accomplishment.”
Distinctions between styles fade beneath the undeniable talent and raw passion that distinguishes Erika's music. Whether singing in English, Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese, with lyrics that capture the intimacy of our human experience and melodies that make distant lands feel like home, her songs invite the listener into terrain that is both vast and familiar. Her energetic exchange transcends the power of sound and penetrates the hearts of her wide-reaching fan base. Some listeners have likened the experience to being “struck by a bolt of goodness” and feeling like they have taken an inspired trip to a “mental spa”. Others claim she has taken them on a “trip around the world, and a trip around the soul”.

RYAN BINGHAM

& THE DEAD HORSES

Americana singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham was born in Hobbs, New Mexico, and raised in rural Texas, where years of hardscrabble ranch work and competitions on the rodeo circuit would eventually surface in the dusty riffs of his country-styled debut, Mescalito. Living alone since his mid-teens, Bingham shuttled back and forth between Southwestern border towns and relatives' homes, often sleeping in his truck after nightly rodeo gigs. It was during those treks that he began entertaining friends with the guitar, an instrument he'd learned at the age of 17 from a mariachi neighbor. Drawing inspiration from Bob Dylan, Marshall Tucker, and Bob Wills-- all of whom populated the jukebox of The Halfway Bar, a roadhouse owned by Bingham's uncle (whose musical tastes influenced those of his nephew) -- Bingham fashioned a road-weary sound that soon piqued the interest of a barroom proprietor in Stephenville, TX.
Bingham was offered a weekly residency at the bar; soon after, he began issuing such self-released albums as Lost Bound Rails and Wishbone Saloon. The popular material was brought to the attention of Nashville heavyweights Lost Highway Records, who signed Bingham and issued his major-label debut, Mescalito(featuring production by Marc Ford, former guitarist for the Black Crowes), in October 2007. Mescalito was well-received by critics, with Rolling Stone aptly comparing Bingham's raw, scratchy voice to that of "Steve Earle's dad." After supporting the album with ample tour dates, the songwriter reprised his relationship with Marc Ford, who produced 2009's Roadhouse Sun. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide  www.binghammusic.com

 william fitzsimmons

William Fitzsimmons is one of the oddest people you will ever meet. Born the youngest child of two blind parents, William was raised in the outskirts of the steel city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Due to the family's inability to communicate through normal visual means, William's childhood home was filled with a myriad of sounds to replace what eyes could not see. The house was suffused with pianos, guitars, trombones, talking birds, classical records, family sing-a-longs, bedtime stories, and the bellowing of a pipe organ, which his father built into the house with his own hands. When his father's orchestral records were not resonating through the walls, his mother would educate him on the folk stylings of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Simon & Garfunkel. www.williamsfitzsimmons.com

CRISTEN GREY

& the MOVING DUNES

CD RELEASE PARTY

Since forming her indie powerpop/rock band Cristen Grey and the Moving Dunes in 2007 and integrating early influences, such as heavy-metal, to classic rock, to more adult contemporary artist's of today, the Santa Fe based singer/songwriter and her powerhouse ensemble have kicked up a lot of dust at venues and festivals throughout the region.
One of the disc’s tracks, the edgy pop/rocker “Out of Control,” was licensed in 2006 for the short film “Bloodline.” Over the past few years, many of her songs have received recognition from the New Mexico Music Awards: “Absolute” and “So Much Better” were awarded Best Rock-Adult Contemporary Song in 2007 and 2008, also 2009 garnered another nomination for “Bad Emotion” under the Mainstream-Rock Category, which were produced and engineered by Grey and Brian Widger. Cristen also has been the only artist selected to perform three years in a row at this event which this year included a very special All-Star performance at the end of the program, highlighting legendary jazz and R&B vocalist Hillary Smith, award-winning producer and musician John Kurzweg, award-winning producer and jazz musician John Rangel, Grammy award-winning producer and guitarist Larry Mitchell and the legendary James Douglas Show.
The Moving Dunes— which includes rhythm and lead guitarist Brian Widger, drummer Mark Clark, bassist Jose Romero, keyboardist Kevin Zoernig and backing vocalists Lisa Carmen and Adrienne Bellis--have performed over the past few years at the Hyperactive Music Festival, this year’s Thirsty Ear Festival (on a bill with artists like Keb’ Mo’, Bela Fleck and Steel Pulse) and regional hotspots. The title 10,000 Things grew out of Grey’s realization, as per Tao philosophy, that we’re all in this world but not of it, on a planet where “three begat 10,000 things” and all of them, including people, are somehow interconnected and related by cause and effect. This project taps into the ongoing flow of unique life experiences and expresses the themes that tie us all together—fear, love, joy and sorrow which are perfectly reflected in tracks like the soaring AC rocker “So Much Better,” in which she exults in finding that special person to connect with and riding out all of life’s ups and downs; the acoustic mid tempo ballad “Absolute,” a hard hitting emotional summary of her lost relationships and the difficulty involved in accepting that they’re gone; and the vocal harmony driven “Stir Up A Storm,” which is about the power of careless words and the damage they can do.

GREENSKY BLUEGRASS is one of the most exciting bands in today’s music scene, fusing tradition with an enthusiasm for improvisation. Like a breath of fresh air, this five piece band plays traditional bluegrass instruments and uses them to create original songs and soundscapes that are unique and new, yet somehow feel comfortable and familiar. Though they have been likened to ‘70s era Americana acts like The Band, Greensky would prefer not to be compared to any other bands. “We really just try to make music as a group that sounds and feels right to us”, says mandolin player Paul Hoffman, later adding that “it is nice to know that other people really dig it, too.”Since winning the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest, Greensky has been touring constantly, playing over 170 shows a year, and all the hard work is certainly paying off. Recent highlights are too many to list, but include selling out venues in many parts of the country, sharing the stage with musical heroes, getting asked to play shows with the likes of Tony Rice and Peter Rowan, Sam Bush, Yonder Mountain String Band and Railroad Earth, and being asked to play the inaugural Rothbury Festival in their home state of Michigan. “It certainly felt like an affirmation that we are doing something right”, noted bass player Mike Devol.  Greensky Bluegrass is Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (upright bass) and Paul Hoffman (mandolin). www.greenskybluegrass.com

That's right, one of the finest bluegrass outfits to ever emerge from the Southwest is getting back together for a special reunion show at the Pub & Grill!

Sharon Gilchrist, Josh Martin and Ben Wright made up the progressive Bluegrass trio, Mary and Mars, which quickly gained a reputation for dynamic live performances, and an exciting range of Bluegrass standards, new compositions, and innovative acoustic interpretations of songs from the wider rock repertoire. Typically, Sharon would play mandolin, Ben guitar, and Josh bass, but with some variation of instruments. All three sang and composed. First formed in April, 2002, the trio became regulars at Santa Fe's Cowgirl Hall of Fame Restaurant, and quickly built up a reputation locally, performing 100 shows in their first 200 days! They were originally known as "The Backsliders", a name which turned out to be in use elsewhere. It is, therefore, under the more distinctive name, Mary and Mars, that the trio reached out to audiences beyond their New Mexico base. In the Spring and Summer of 2004 they were involved in an extensive tour, mainly in the Western states, and included appearances at the South by South West Festival in Austin, Texas, and the "Big Wu" Festival, at Clarks Grove, Minnesota. After the enthusiastic following they built up in the area around Santa Fe, this led to favorable reviews in several papers and on-line.  homepage.ntlworld.com/farawayhills/maryandmars.html

CAROLYN WONDERLAND

She may not be a nationally-known figure (yet), but Carolyn Wonderland is a bona-fide star in her home state of Texas. The Houston-bred, Austin-based triple threat – soulful singer, diverse songwriter, fiery guitarist – has been tearing up the stages and roadhouses of the Lone Star state and beyond for well over a decade. Carolyn Wonderland and her band have been steadily touring the world and releasing CD's since the mid-nineties. Carolyn has won tons of awards including recent accolades as 2009 Best Female Vocalist at the Austin Music Awards, also sharing 2009 Best Blues Band with her band mates Lefty and Cole, and, for several previous years, she’s wonHouston Press Music Awards' songwriter of the year, musician of the year, release of the year, and best guitarist and best vocalist! Carolyn has toured with Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter, jammed with Los Lobos and Bob Dylan, recorded with Asleep at the Wheel, Jerry Lightfoot and Vince Welnick!. Her music has been featured on prime-time network TV dramas and major indie feature films. Whether she's at huge festivals, road houses and rock clubs or other nights in a more intimate Austin setting, you can still catch her playing live almost every night of the week!  www.carolynwonderland.com
WITH SPECIAL  GUEST PIGMENT

Organized improvisation is the fundamental idea in this band. Pigment has the ability to take the listener on musical journeys they may have never experienced. Pigment samples from so many different styles it is hard to choose just one. However, because improvisation is the cornerstone of their music, they are best described as “jam rock”. Ryan Welsh, lead guitar and vox, has full command over his electronics to create a guitar sound that is “out of this world.” His spidery licks, sonic sounds and power driven riffs form psychedelic layers like the threads of a well woven tapestry. On to the rhythm section that gives this castle the foundation it sits on. Chris Hall, on bass, and Lael Eccard on drums/percussion/vox give the listener the feeling that this band is for real. Their hip shaking, foot stompin’, fist pumping grooves are sure to leave the crowd exhausted at the end of an evening. Together this bands original works are aggressive, soothing, thought provoking, sensitive, exhilarating and can take the masses into another dimension…one of sheer bliss! Pigment also comes prepared, to each show, with an arsenal of cover tunes that is fitting to its audience.
This band has been featured at the NM State Fair and Elliot’s in Albuquerque; Willee’s Blues Club and Santa Fe Brewing Co in Santa Fe; and the Lazy Lizard in Angel Fire, to name a few. Bookings have also begun to branch out into neighboring Colorado as well. With the completion of their debut album, recorded at local Frogville Records Recording Studio, Pigment plans on touring the southwest spreading their love for music to all shapes, sizes and pigments of people.

THE RIFTERS

The Rifters formed in 2002 in the fertile and creative music scene of Taos, New Mexico from members of two popular bands already active in the area. Jim Bradley and Don Richmond of Hired Hands, and Rod Taylor and Steve Garry of the Rounders, who had all known one another for years playing in the acoustic dance-oriented Americana music scene of Northern New Mexico, decided to join forces to form The Rifters. And just what sort of music do The Rifters play? From the liner notes to their self-titled first CD, released in July of 2004 on Howlin’ Dog Records:“It’s music that comes from where we come from – both from the high desert and mountain landscape of our home and from the background and experiences of our lives – sort of a laid-back high-energy gentle giant old blue-buffalo-grama-grassy, cowboy, folky, shake-a-leg with a smile sort of thing. A rift is a split or a gap, sort of the like the Rio Grande Rift that we all live on or around. But this music is more about bridging gaps. For us the music is what ties all the different times and places together. We hope you enjoy it.” www.howlingdogrecords.net

TOM RUSSELL

Tom Russell was born in Los Angeles in 1952 and now makes his home on the border of El Paso-Juarez. He graduated from the University of California with a Master's Degree in Criminology, taught school in Nigeria during the Biafran War, and then relocated to Vancouver. He began his music career in the bars of Vancouver's skid row. He has since lived in Austin, San Francisco, New York and, finally, on a 2.68 badlands farm in the desert of West Texas. He is a painter, novelist, filmmaker, and acclaimed songwriter. His recent recording is "Wounded Heart of America," which features lost tracks of people who have recorded Tom's songs, from Johnny Cash and Doug Sahm, to Joe Ely, Jerry Jeff Walker, Nanci Griffith, Iris Dement and Dave Van Ronk. The record also includes Tom's recording of "Who's Gonna Build Your Wall?" which he performed on his fourth appearance on Late Night with David Letterman TV show, August 21, 2007. Tom Russell has recorded one DVD and 21 albums of original material. His songs have been recorded by Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Johnny Cash, KD Lang, Nanci Griffith, Doug Sahm, Dave Alvin, Joe Ely, Ian Tyson, and 100's of others. He is credited, along with Dave Alvin, with establishing the Americana radio format with their co-produced tribute to Merle Haggard, Tulare Dust, released on Hightone in 1994. The Columbus Other wrote: "Russell seems to have invented and keeps reinventing the Americana genre. He goes from strength to strength. It's as if Muhammed Ali were knocking-out opponents at age 60. Russell is the only writer of his generation who grows stronger with each release." His songs have appeared in a dozen films, including Songcatcher and Tremors. Russell has published three books: a detective novel, a songwriting compendium of quotes with Sylvia Tyson, and a book of letters with Charles Bukowski. His paintings were recently featured in Paste Magazine and a major exhibition of his artwork took place at Yard Dog Folk Art Gallery, Austin, Texas from February to April 2006. His art can be purchased at www.yarddog.com. Tom Russell's recording catalogue is available from www.villagerecords.com.
