The Hot Club of Cowtown is the most globe-trotting, hard-swinging Western Swing trio on the planet. The band--Elana James on violin and vocals, Whit Smith on guitar and vocals, and Jake Erwin on bass and vocals--still swings harder than ever as it continues to develop it's unique, ever-changing sound. These Albuquerque hot-shots could be the deviant love child of Kurt Cobain and Emmy Lou Harris.....Voted best New Emerging Band in the annual Best of Burque-2008!

 OR, THE WHALE

San Francisco's most energetic family band, Or, the Whale comes to Santa Fe at last! With a strong DIY ethic, and a Carter Family chemistry, they've continued to warm hearts and move feet throughout the country!

THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF A SANTA FE LEGEND

 THE GLUEY BROTHERS

The fusion of funk, rap, and metal is hardly a new trick, but what make California's Gluey Brothers one of the smarter novelty acts to come along recently is their deftly delivered performance art shtick: wild, prop-driven theatrics that are both offbeat hilarious and well-rehearsed. Best of all, dual frontmen MC Tahina and King Hummus seem virtually telepathic, never missing out on a shared punchline.

WENDY COLONNA

Wendy Colonna may live in Austin these days, but one listen to her soulful vocals and her south Louisiana roots are obvious. Colonna grew up in Lake Charles and her music is a spicy stick-to-your-ribs Gulf Coast gumbo of soul and blues and funk. The first time I heard Colonna I thought of another sultry southern country soul singer, the great Rita Coolidge. But Colonna is hardly a one-trick pony, and even a cursory listen to her albums Red and Where I Belong reveals a complex vocalist reminiscent of a bevy of important female artists: the brash bluesy thing of Bonny Raitt, the pop genius of Carole King, the raw emotion and huge pipes of Joan Osborne, and the soul shout of Queen Aretha. It’s this kind of talent that brought Colonna acclaim as KGSR Radio’s new artist of 2005 and brings out A-list Austin players like Guy Forsyth and Shelley King when she records.

  THE LAWS

The Laws are husband-and-wife award-winning singer/songwriters from Ontario,
Canada. They have recently recorded their 5th CD of original music and have
been touring non-stop throughout Canada, the U.S. and Australia since 2000.
Their Americana style songs are an acoustic mix of roots country, bluegrass,
folk and pop, delivered with The Laws trademark "tight-as-a-glove" harmony
singing. John and Michele Law each sing lead and harmony vocals often
switching within songs. John is an expert picker on guitar and mandolin and
Michele is a solid bass and acoustic guitar rhythm player.

“ …. begins with this languid, swaying, romantic melody that recalls The Everly Brothers in their prime. Yes, the harmonies really are that good. The mandolin and accordion solos are utterly lovely. Michele adds a third vocal part on “Go Easy” and swings lightly in “Put Some Love In It.” John dazzles with his mandolin instrumental “Texacadia.” They both hypnotize you on “Whiskey and Gasoline” and delight you with finger-popping “Getting Over You.” Heartily recommended.”
Robert Oermann, Music Row Magazine

“John and Michele Law's songs seem to be the lost essence of country music which has now become so commercial and formulaic sounding.” Randy Bachman

"If Gram Parsons married Alison Krauss their music would sound a lot like John and Michele." Willie P Bennett

 The BELLVILLE OUTFIT

With a tight, seamless, and an acoustic sound that's uniquely their's — a mix of gypsy swing, big band jazz and cross-genre Americana music, original songs and some clever covers — the startling six-piece Belleville Outfit of Austin belies the tender age of its members and its vast experience garnered swiftly after its union around Merlefest 2007 in Wilkesboro, N.C.

In fact, in just six months, the band has played for more than 10,000 people, ridden in a van-with-trailer to shows all the way from Texas to Tennessee, from Colorado to New York, and sold out shows up and down the East Coast and through Texas. They've shared stages with the likes of Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Del McCoury Band, The Waybacks, and The Duhks, and recorded a full-length album with producers John Rees and Bil Vorndick. When the band is home, members soak up other acts’ music, absorbing how music transmits energy from musician to listener, healing both — always learning, learning from the past but breathing their own interpretations into what they hear.

 THE SOUTH AUSTIN

JUG BAND

Let’s just get it out of the way right now: There’s no jug-playing in the South Austin Jug Band. And the bluegrass connotation that name carries should be spilled down the drain along with any other moonshine-preconceived notions. Sure, there’s fiddle, mandolin, an upright bass … but there’s also drumming, occasional electric guitar and even digital looping. And Beck. The band’s latest album, Strange Invitation, gets its title from a lyric in Mr. Hansen’s 1997 charmer, “Jackass,” the only cover on this 11-song collection.
Comparisons, if they must be made, might meander more toward a low-intensity Grateful Dead (which, it should be noted, started out as a real jug band) or something with an even more melodic and laid-back vibe. Lead singer/acoustic guitarist James Hyland, whose tenor redefines mellow, would be quite happy if you’d just go with “bitchin’ tunes.”

      WITH VERY SPECIAL GUEST

 CARRIE RODRIGUEZ

Alejandro Escovedo releases his 9th solo album Real Animal, a collective journey through Escovedo’s musical incarnations from punk rock to string quintets and is as introspective as it is retrospective. Recalling the people, places and influences that helped shape his career, Real Animal represents the primitive aspect of Escovedo’s music - the instinct, the urgency and a survivor mentality that fuels his musical passion.

JJ GREY & MOFRO

JJ Grey and his band MOFRO exude rocking, funky, melodic, front porch realism in every song they play. Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern storytellers, and his songs oftentimes use the loss of his natural surroundings and the marginalization of the Southern culture he grew up in as a metaphor for universal truths. The band delivers his material with brilliant musicianship, resulting in music that is thought provoking, rhythmically dynamic and texturally mesmerizing.
