KIM & THE CABALLEROS
.jpg)
Kim says: “My mom force fed old country (we’re talkin’ Loretta, Cash, Waylon, Willie and the boys) to me at an early age, and I rebelled, first playing bass in an 80s rock band, “The Bohiems”, later becoming a folkie, still leaning in the rock genre, but mostly writing tortured love songs and political/social stuff in the band “Burning Joan.” For giggles, in 2003 I recorded a bastardized version of “Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain” for my mom’s birthday, and it all took off from there. I realized my roots had caught up to me and I liked it. We recordered the CD Blue Hearted Girl at Howlin’ Dog Studios in Alamosa, Co. and in Nashville. I live in Taos, New Mexico with my children; work with homeless youth at the DreamTree Project; garden; ride my horse, Nugget, up in the mountains (just like the song says); and sing big ‘ol twangy country every chance I get.”

RANKIN' SCROO

THE INTERNATIONAL URBAN REGGAE GODFADA
The Urban Reggae Artist Rankin Scroo was born and raised in Jamaica. Music has always been the focus of his life. From his earliest days singing in church to his teenage years as a DJ-Toaster (reggae rapper) he achieved recognition all over Jamaica as a talented musician. New York city became Rankins first home abroad where he performed with numerous sound systems and live bands. His vitality and intensity of expression carried his artistry from the Atlantic to the Pacific pioneering reggae music in the Hawaiian Islands where he formed Crucial Youth Production (recording studio and band). In Hawaii Rankin met Ginger and the two began to write and perform together. Their unique blend of musical backgrounds and vocals created the highly acclaimed reggae duo Rankin Scroo and Ginger and pioneered the sound now recognized worldwide as Jawaiian music. For the past fifteen years, their releases and live performances have astounded crowds worldwide, from Jamaica to Europe and all over North America. Rankin Scroo and Ginger have won numerous awards and honors for their works and are highly regarded as veteran performers in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their songs still enjoy regular rotation in Jamaica and Hawaii. Rankin settled in the Bay Area and brought Crucial Youth with him. He is a highly sought after musical composer whose creative arrangements have enhanced the words and melodies of many major label artists, like Black Uhuru, Frankie Paul, Lutan Fyah, Too Short, Keak da Sneak, E-40, Messy Marv, Tyquan, to mention a few. Rankins musical versatility has given birth to reggae rhythms and vocal styles that transcend the reggae music category. Urban Reggae is the genesis of Rankins diverse musical influences. This cutting edge style masterfully blended Reggae Dancehall, Hip-Hop, and R&B into a sound that has mass cross over appeal and has been emulated worldwide by Spanish speaking Reggaeton artists. Rankin was the pioneer of this sound in California in the late 1990s. Godfada released in 2001 showcased this sound. This album served not only as an introduction to Urban Reggae but also to Rankin Scroo as a solo artist. Since this albums release Rankins status as a premier artist and producer among Bay Area Hip-Hop and R&B artists has been confirmed with numerous collaborations, soundtracks, and roles in films. Rankins latest offering SOLID is a showcase of Rankin Scroos authentic Jamaican sound and style. A work for all music lovers, SOLID portrays Rankins passion for music as we explore his life experiences and revelations. SOLID is a shining example of Rankins musical genius, and is poised to capture the market in Jamaica and subsequently in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Rankin delivers the knowledge and spiritually uplifting message that has made him a house hold name in the reggae community consistently on this album. From the first note to the last echo, this album flows lyrically and musically through a tapestry of style and emotion that makes SOLID a must have, must hear CD. www.myspace.com/rankinscroo

FRONTIER RUCKUS

LYRICAL INDIE FOLK ROCK FROM MICHIGAN
Frontier Ruckus is most usually in a perpetual state of waiting—limbo. This is an enormous place to be; it is seen clearly in the modern space of the "dead mall." It's like this, buildings and towns and counties are containers that gradually show the glowing life or death of the things within them. The existence of locality, and the connection of all the spaces or people you engulf via bodies and via breath, that expansiveness of breath, is where Frontier Ruckus resides, and it is past that county-line-frontier where knowledge and affection blur into nothing. Every space/place/winter gas station lot/anonymous-dim-white-metal-highwayside-dome/etc. that you've known and eye-gulped compulsively throughout a lifetime is a container of memory and affect, and the faces of these places, these containers, are slowly exhibiting explicit portrayals of that which they hold—body and breath and horrible nighttime cosmos. When Frontier Ruckus is in song, the dynamism throatily throttles out of idle and the container spills all of its fluid out onto the bashful and awful hands of anything that does the pumping. www.myspace.com/frontierruckus

BILL HEARNE'S
ROADHOUSE REVUE
.jpg)
Honkytonks, roadhouses, empty whiskey glasses, unrequited love are the brick and mortar of country music and there isn't a better mason than Bill Hearne. Dallas born Bill Hearne finds his way into a song's interior with a baritone as mellow as bourbon and smoky as a Texas pool hall and a picking style that satisfies both your feet and heart. At its best, country music is elegiac, a meat and potatoes campfire poem about heartbreak and redemption. It's about truth, the kind that hurts and the kind that heals. In lesser hands, it's also a cliché. A broken man in faded-jeans on a barstool. A Dear John letter fluttering in the hot Texas wind. A train song and an empty bed. Bill never lets this potent iconography off the hook. Whether burning through a roadhouse number or staggering through the valley of heartaches, Bill never lies. He feels it, and so do we. The new Bill Hearne CD, "A Good Ride" will be available at the Pub & Grill at the SFBC. The new CD was recorded at Don Richmond's Howlin' Dog Studio in Alamosa Colorado, along with two tracks recorded here at Frogville Studio in Santa Fe. www.billhearne.com

Dear Companion, out February 16th on Sub Pop Records, is collaboration between three Kentucky musicians: the songs are written and performed by Ben Sollee and Daniel Martin Moore, produced by and featuring Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket and Monsters of Folk. Recorded in the first half of 2009 in their home state, Dear Companion explores their ties to the place they love and aims to draw attention to the problem of mountaintop removal coal mining and its impact on the people and heritage of central Appalachia. A portion of the proceeds from Dear Companion will benefit Appalachian Voices, an organization devoted to ending mountaintop removal and finding a better way forward. Learn more at: www.ilovemountains.org or www.subpop.com
Ben Sollee infused his much-lauded 2008 debut album Learning to Bend, with his unique synthesis of folk, soul, and bluegrass. No Depression put the album on their top five of 2008, Paste listed him on The Best of What's Next, NPR raved, and music blogs continue to provide Sollee a steady torrent of praise. His impressive debut also landed him prominent spots on the festival circuit, including Austin City Limits and Bonnaroo, as well as a riveting set on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
After serving in the Peace Corps, Daniel Martin Moore won over Sub Pop Records in 2007 with an unsolicited demo of deceptively simple songs, and found himself working with producer Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, U2, The Shins) on his first album, the 2008 release Stray Age. With Stray Age, Daniel became a critical darling, eliciting comparisons from Nick Drake to M. Ward. The album’s producer, Yim Yames, renowned guitarist/singer/songwriter from Monsters of Folk and My Morning Jacket needs little in the way of further introduction.
Mountaintop removal is a radical form of surface mining that uses massive explosives to blast off several hundred feet of mountaintop in order to expose and remove thin seams of coal. The resulting rubble, or overburden, is then pushed into nearby valleys, burying streams. This has devastating impacts on the land, air and water of local communities. To date, this practice has destroyed more than 500 mountains and buried more than 2000 miles of streams. Appalachian Voices created iLoveMountains.org in conjunction with local, state, and regional partners to grow and support the national movement to end mountaintop removal coal mining and help create a prosperous future for the region.Willa Mays, Executive Director for Appalachian Voices said, “We realized the most effective way to end mountaintop removal mining is to create a national movement of people who love America's Appalachian Mountains. We thank Ben, Daniel, Yim and Sub-Pop for helping grow this movement.”

T-Model Ford's credentials are impeccable; if anything he's over qualified. He was born James Lewis Carter Ford in Forrest, a small community in Scott County, Mississippi. T-Model thinks he's seventy-five but isn't sure. He was plowing a field behind a mule on his family's farm by age eleven, and in his early teens he secured a job at a local sawmill. He excelled and was later recruited by a foreman from a bigger lumber company in the Delta, near Greenville, and eventually got promoted to truck driver. During the time he spent driving and working in a log camp, T-Model ran into trouble, and was eventually sentenced to ten years on a chain-gang for murder. He lucked out and was released after serving two. He says, grinning, "I could really stomp some ass back then, stomp it good. I was a-sure-enough dangerous man." When asked how many times he'd been to jail, T-Model responded, "I don't know. How many?" He seemed to think it might be a trick question. Upon realizing it wasn't, he answered to the best of his ability. "Every Saturday night there for awhile." As disheartening as this is, it's also a refreshing reminder of how ridiculous the present image of a bluesman is. Nothing could be more twisted than the romanticized and picturesque standard...an old black man devoid of anger and rage happily strumming an acoustic guitar on the back porch of his shack "in that evening sun". T-Model couldn't be further from this fabricated image. At 3/4 of a century old and with a dislocated hip, hes still cussing, fighting, and outdrinking men a quarter his age. Spam to his friends,Tommy Lee Miles to the authorities, he has been T-Model's A-number-one drummer for the past eight years. T-Model and Spam are the only men still playing on Greenville's Nelson Street. Most of the audience has scattered due to violence from the crack trade, and with the exception of T-Model, the street that once boasted Booba Barnes and others is dead. On a typical night Spam and T-Model will arrive at the club and unpack T-Model's guitar and amp, and the bass drum and snare he allows Spam to use. When T-Model feels there are enough people, they start banging away in their own post-war Peavey-powered hill stomp. It's nothing unusual for T-Model to play eight hours a night. They keep going until no one's left standing. After his equipment's packed up T-Model will coat himself with Off and climb into his van to crash. www.myspace.com/tmodelford
"Take the intensity of Stevie Ray Vaughan's scorching guitar technique and apply it to Bob Dylan's stark, earnest songwriting, and what you now have is the music of bluesman Jake Lear," writes Elmore Magazine. Lear, who was born in Vermont and raised on blues and country music, spent his entire adult life playing in various East Coast blues and rock bands, including a lengthy apprenticeship in New York City clubs such as the Knitting Factory, the Bitter End and CBGB. He spent the last year playing to thousands on Memphis’ renowned Beale Street, honing the hard-hitting blues on which he is building a growing national reputation. Lear’s second and latest full-length release is Lost Time Blues.www.jakelear.com
Perhaps NM's most popular blues outfits, Soul Kitchen's straight-up blues wanders somewhere between Saturday night revelry and Sunday morning redemption. The Albuquerque-based group features vocalist extraordinaire Hillary Smith, winner of Albuquerque Magazine's 2009 Best Vocalist award; well-regarded guitarist Chris Dracup; and journeyman Tommy Elskes, who recently had one of his songs covered by Lyle Lovett.

THE POSTELLES

Hockey is an American new wave band from Portland, Oregon that has been compared to The Strokes and LCD Soundsystem. They deal in retro dance anthems. The Constellations are an amorphous funk rock group out of Atlanta, GA that describes their sound as “a psychedelic soul-rock explosion.” Weaned on a healthy diet of equal parts sweet Motown sound and New York's grit and grime, The Postelles are in line to a long tradition of great pop music, at once sweetly constructed and achingly raw.

STEPHANIE HATFIELD
& HOT MESS

Originally from the Detroit area, Stephanie Hatfield began singing in 3 different church choirs at the age of 8. Her first solo in front of a congregation of 200 began her life long passion for performing that has been evident to anyone who has heard her. Focusing primarily on classical music she began competing and performing which eventually led her to study classical performance at Michigan State University. Originally in pursuit of opera, she promptly fell in love with Jazz improv which began the second phase of her musical education. A move out West after college brought an expansion of musical experience including broadway, country, folk and rock. After compiling a collection of original music, Stephanie went into the studio at Frogville to create her debut album with amazing musicians such as Bill Palmer (Hundred Year Flood guitarist and Frogville engineer/producer), Matt McClinton (grunge rocker and producer), Jason Aspeslet (drummer of Trilobite, Zaduo, The Quartrio, Bernadette Seacrest), Kevin Zoernig (keyboard genius) and Tommy Stephenson (keys for Tommy Bolin, Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, etc.).

Audacity is the name of the game, and bravado knows no shame. The sexiest band in San Francisco sends epic melodies soaring over sumptuous riffs, relinquishing the mediocrity of life to the majesty of rock. This triumph of sound is matched only by the grandeur of performance. Dancers adorned in furs, feathers and fishnets shake and grind under a heroic light show overflowing with intrigue and innuendo. This sensual mix of drama and power, lust and longing, scorn and wit all unite to create an event erupting with radiant glamour and raw spectacle. Lock your doors and hide your daughters. La Junta began early 2004 in a small back room of an old little house in a student ghetto, built on a foundation of house parties with a sound combining various musical styles. Influenced by so many genres, including jazz, blues, rock, reggae, Latin and hip-hop music, every song is significantly different from the next. Attempting to blend each sound, La Junta believes they have found something very refreshing in an industry of cardboard cutouts. With their unique style as a backdrop, La Junta reflects what they observe in everyday life as well as represent who they and where they come from in a positive way. This is the beginning of “SouthwestFunkRock”.
Any of La Juntas 4 albums are amazing fingerprints for the group. However, nothing compares to the energy, fun, and musicianship of a live La Junta show. Fans often compare La Junta to groups such as Spearhead, Ozomatli, 311, O.A.R., Dave Mathews, and Sublime. Because of this La Juntas fan base continues to grow exponentially, based on a consistent incline of CD sales and attendance at live performances. It is true that every group in the music industry believes they are "fresh" and "Unique"... and we are no different. Where we do differ is the response from fans is that we are "fresh" and "unique". Something new, and we didn't even have to tell them.

Grey is actively working on licensing songs for film and television. Cristen also has been the only artist selected to perform three years in a row at this event which last year included a very special All-Star performance at the end of the program, highlighting jazz and R&B vocalist Hillary Smith, award-winning producer and musician John Kurzweg, award-winning producer and jazz musician John Rangel, Grammy award-winning producer and guitarist Larry Mitchell and the legendary James Douglas Show. Musically sophisticated, intimate and irreverent all at once, this record highlights what’s best about Americana music and offers it a Brand New Frame.Produced by Willy Porter (www.willyporter.com), Brand New Frame features Zukerman on vocals and guitars, with Dave Schoepke on drums, Leroy Deuster on Pedal Steel, Bryan Mir on electric bass, Todd Sickafoose (Ani Difranco) and Marty Ballou (John Hammond) on upright bass. The album is also sprinkled with notable guest appearances by fellow songwriters Willy Porter, Melissa Ferrick and Edie Carey.Since 2004, Zukerman has been touring the country opening shows for roots greats and guitar slingers including Kelly Joe Phelps, Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, Garnet Rogers, Melissa Ferrick, Catie Curtis, Susan Werner and many others. It was on the road that Zukerman formed the relationship with Willy Porter that would lead to producing Brand New Frame and releasing the album on his label Weasel Records. “Brand New Frame is a perfect fit with what I’ve always wanted Weasel to represent. The small but mighty team here is thrilled to share Natalia’s record, and tremendous talent, with the world.” -Willy Porter.

Midlake was formed in 1999 by jazz students at the University of North Texas. Their initial work – under the name "The Cornbread All-Stars" — consisted of funk/jazz explorations heavily influenced by Herbie Hancock. Later the band began to lean more toward an indie-rock sound. Tim Smith quit playing saxophone and began writing songs that were heavily influenced by bands such as Jethro Tull, Radiohead, Björk, and Grandaddy, artists who experiment, while still remaining accessible. www.midlake.net www.myspace.com/midlake
